It was a devastating time, far overshadowing the carnage of World War I as the pandemic killed more people in less time than any disease before or since. With 25% to 30% of the worlds population having clinically apparent illnesses and a mortality rate of 2.5% - 5%, it is believed that more than 675,000 Americans were among the 50-100 million that died worldwide. Because many experts believe that it is not a matter of if the world will encounter another 1918-like flu pandemic, but when, this social history of the pandemic should be considered essential reading for students, public health officials, doctors, nurses, journalists, and those in government office, interested in learning what workedand didntduring that grim time.

ex. say you got infected on monday. when do you actually begin to feel sick?

I am asking because on monday my friend, who was not sick at that time, but contagious (she was sick w/ fever today, tuesday, & you are contagious up to one day before the symptoms), made me hold her clothes which she likely coughed on. If she did, I probably got the virus because I didn't wash my hands after touching the clothes and proceeded to eat, etc.

Swine Flu – A Killer Pandemic Which Targets Children?

SWINE FLU Is Now Pandemic and The Vaccine Will Be In Short Supply

You MUST Assume The Virus WILL Reach Your Family Shortly.

In Fact The Likelihood That Someone In Your Family Will Be Infected Is Greater Than 70 Percent. If You Act Now, You Still Have Time To Learn How To Protect Against SWINE FLU.

Presented In One Document, Containing Detailed Analysis, Saving You Dozens Of Hours of research.

I want to quickly run some numbers past you so that you can see where my assertion comes from that there is a greater than 70 percent chance that someone within your immediate family will begin exhibiting swine flu symptoms. Don't worry, I promise it will be a very short math lesson. Then I will tell you what can be done to reduce that statistic - at least for your family because you are about learn things that 99 percent of the population will never take the time to find out for themselves.

If you read through the next few short paragraphs - which set this whole swine flu pandemic in context and you still think you do not need to devise some form of pandemic preparedness to deal with this health threat, then I will not waste any more of your time. Hopefully that sounds reasonable. OK, here we go.

The Mathematics of Pandemic Flu

Before the current strain of swine flu settles into the human population and assumes its new role as a seasonal flu strain, roughly one third of the world's population of 6.6 billion people will become infected. This prediction is based on the known behaviour of the last three influenza pandemics from 1918, 1957, and 1968. It is also a straight forward consequence of the fact that we have no natural immunity to this new virus. What this means is that for any given person, the chance that they will not become infected and begin showing symptoms of swine flu over the course of the pandemic is about two out of three, or 2 / 3. Those might seem like good odds, but the problem is that the odds need to be multiplied for every member of your family. So for a family of three (mother, father, and child) the chance than nobody within your family will be affected is given roughly by the quantity

2 / 3 x 2 / 3 x 2 / 3 = 0.3

Seen another way, the likelihood that your family of three will be touched by swine flu is 70 percent. For a family of four, the likelihood is 80 percent, and the number just gets higher as your family size increases. Granted, this is a very rough analysis of the odds of infection, but there is nothing outlandish about the final numbers. This is simply how the mathematics of pandemics pans out - and it is never in your favour. If those numbers surprise you, and make you feel uncomfortable, that's OK. It is better to experience surprise and discomfort now than to be surprised in the future when swine flu makes its way to your front door. My job will be to help you lessen the chance of that happening, so that the term swine influenza need not become a part of your everyday vocabulary.

Hopefully you will be starting to see the need to take this influenza pandemic seriously. If you are less than 41 years of age you will have never experienced a pandemic, so you can be forgiven for being sceptical about the need to prepare. It's like the period leading up to your first earthquake, or hurricane - they just do not seem all that dreadful until the moment you find yourself caught in one, at which point you find that your thinking changes dramatically.

Trust me this is not something you want to happen to you.

Make The Effort To Learn Today So That You May Protect Your Children Tomorrow http://viralurl.com/wellness/surviveFlu

A Pandemic Which Targets Children?

I am a parent, and I am going to assume that you are one too. I am inclined to do this because when you are young and single and without children, you tend to feel like you are invincible, and something like the threat of pandemic influenza is not likely to send you searching for information on the web about how to deal with it. This is the curse of youth, and it is not something that begins to lift until you are out of your twenties and children have entered your life.

Even if you still maintain the delusion, as I do, that somehow you will muddle through any threat to your safety, you are not likely to be so cavalier when it comes to your children. I know that I am not. In fact, now that I am a parent, the world looks quite threatening to me and I spend a lot of my time thinking about the dangers that lurk around every corner.

I have thought a lot about influenza over the years, and have studied it intently - at first with great interest, and later with foreboding, especially now that I am a parent and have more to lose in the event of a severe pandemic.

The average age of those infected by swine flu in 2009 is just 19 years of age. Unlike seasonal strains of influenza, the novel H1N1 swine flu strain, as it is called, has a particular affinity for the very young. This simple fact should have parents everywhere concerned.

Your children, as you are well aware, can neither recognize that a threat now looms, nor can they do anything to alleviate that threat. They are completely dependent on you for help. This is why is it my hope that you will both educate yourself and prepare some form of pandemic planning, so that both you and the rest of your family will be ready to face the threat with the least amount of risk to your well-being.

This will not happen by accident. It will be up to you to prevent swine flu from making an impact on your life, but I can help you with that as I have already spent the time needed to figure out what the important things are that you need to know.

By reading Survive Pandemic Flu you will quickly learn everything that I have spent (literally) years discovering about pandemic flu and how to survive ity

Why This Should Matter To You

It is easy to forget just how devastating the toll can be on your family or the family of someone you know when a pandemic rises up and sweeps through the community.

The following points made by the American Red Cross - which are in line with my own understanding of this disease - warn about influenza and its reach into U.S. homes:

Each year, over 20,000 children under age 5 are hospitalized as a result of seasonal influenza. A severe pandemic could result in 90 million people getting sick and over 2 million fatalities. The 1918 flu pandemic claimed 675,000 lives (and upwards of 100 million worldwide). The world witnessed three pandemic outbreaks in the twentieth century alone.

The Centres For Disease Control and Prevention put out the following 7 minute video of personal stories from families affected adversely by flu, to remind us of the dangers. While the deaths of less than about 100 small children result from seasonal influenza or its complications every year, this number can swell to thousands, even tens of thousands, during a severe pandemic, and the number of older children and young adults whose lives may be lost can also be substantially greater than anything seen during a regular flu year.

Despite the fact that, to date, the new swine flu strain SEEMS to give rise (most of the time) to fairly mild cases of illness, pandemic flu is completely unpredictable and you need to educate yourself ahead of time so that you will be prepared for any eventuality.

Will The Swine Flu Vaccine Shot Be Safe?

The short answer to this question is yes, and in the book you will discover why.

But there is a problem. A big problem. Vaccine manufacturers have come up short on their vaccine delivery schedule because of production difficulties. Instead of the 120 million anticipated doses that were to be made available to the U.S. population in mid October, they are now saying that only 45 million doses will be available for initial inoculations. This means that tens of millions of Americans will have to forgo their expected swine flu shot until later in the flu season. If you are generally in good health, then that means you.

Make no mistake, when a swine flu vaccine is made available to people there will be a great deal of confusion surrounding who should get it, and why. The swine flu inoculation program of 2009 will be the largest such program in the history of public health programs. But because of supply problems, not everyone will be eligible to participate.

Because of time constraints, the requirement that clinical testing procedures be implemented and followed before production of the vaccine can be scaled up, and the fact that the ingredients for a swine flu vaccine have proven difficult to cultivate, there will NOT be sufficient vaccines available for everyone who may want a shot in 2009. In the book you will learn why this is the case, and what you can do in the event that you are not eligible to receive the swine flu vaccine due to shortages.

Learn how you can be prepared by reading a book that quite simply could save your life

Belonging to the list of the most common diseases affecting mankind is flu. And oddly enough, every time it strikes humanity, it does so with a force even greater than its previous rampage. One reason for this is the virus that causes flu mutates and displays amazing abilities to cope up with medications. Nonetheless, a flu cold is something that is not really to be feared especially since modern and upgraded medications are constantly being discovered, which results to better influenza treatment. It must be stressed however that in seeking flu treatment, one should not easily purchase just about any over-the-counter flu drugs because many of these are no longer able to work against the flu virus. When seeking the best flu medication, you must consider only the standard through which other flu drugs are measured against: Fluendz.

One of the latest discoveries by scientific and research teams worldwide in the aspect of influenza treatment is that many medications that are taken orally are bound to fail in the first place. This is because such medications are in capsule or tablet form that takes time to melt and for their healing ingredients to enter the bloodstream. Moreover, because they are taken orally, such medicines need to overcome the very hostile environment in the digestive system that can potentially kill off the active ingredient in them. This is why a flu cold medication must be homeopathic because a homeopathic medicine comes in very minute particles, which make it easy for the body to absorb it.

When it comes to homeopathic flu medicine, there is nothing that can match the efficiency of Fluendz. Considered as the best flu medication right now, Fluendz was developed with the failure of most previous flu medicines in mind. A major innovation is that Fluendz comes in a spray form, which results in the release of very fine vapors that the body can easily absorb. Moreover, the medicine is prescribed to be taken sublingually. The medicine comes with an administrator for spraying it beneath the tongue. This is because the area beneath the tongue has numerous blood vessels that facilitate the easy and quick absorption of the medicine. This is the finest flu cold treatment out there that uses this innovative technique of administering it to influenza patients.

So when you are worried about the flu symptoms, especially when they come in bunches that positively points to the onset of influenza, worry no more because Fluendz is now here. It is one of those flu medicines that is safe not only for kids but for adults as well. So once the symptoms of flu cold are detected, be sure to immediately buy Fluendz from the nearest drugstore. Unlike other medications for flu, it can be taken immediately without any worries for possible side effects; otherwise doctors will not highly recommend it to influenza patients. Its efficiency and having no side effects to the body are the results of painstaking research conducted by competent scientists behind its manufacture.

For several years the media has been cautiously following the possibility of a bird flu outbreak, but swine flu has beaten it to the punch. Influenza is a nasty little virus that can be deadly under the right conditions, and bird flu is a particularly bad strain that is deadly more often. No matter which strain happens to be floating around; the symptoms are the same; coughing, sneezing, aching and fever. If you have a cold, this could also describe how you feel except for the fever; which only occurs with the flu. Education is always the best way to combat fear, so knowing the facts about influenza can help ease the mind.

There are dozens of different possible flu strains that can circulate through the population at any one time. Once you get one of these strains, your body learns to produce a defense against that particular strain and you can’t get it again after your body beats it. If you could get all of them, you would never get the flu again; but only a few strains float around at once. As time passes and new people are born, old strains begin to come back and infect a whole new population with no immunity. About 2% of all the people who catch the flu will die from it due to complications like old age and compromised immune systems. The worst outbreak happened in 1918 and killed about 20% of everyone who contracted the virus, but our knowledge is far greater now than it was then.

The first thing to remember about swine flu is that it’s just another flu strain; and this isn’t the first time we have seen it. Every year doctors guess which strains will float around the population and they produce a vaccine to fight them. Swine flu wasn’t what they guessed for this year, but even last years flu vaccine seems to be partially effective in preventing people from getting this strain. It also responds very well to every type of treatment we currently use to fight influenza. All in all, less than 1% of people who catch swine flu die from it; so it’s even lighter than just a regular flu.

The last time swine flu showed up was in 1976, and just like now there was a large panic in the population because of bad information. The government spent millions of dollars on a flu vaccine that did little to help with the strain, and people were urged to get the shot for the whole family. When it was all said and done, more people had died from the vaccine than from the flu itself because the strain never swept through the population. This time around, it is more widespread and it appears to be hitting the population with a fury. A feverish, achy, take a couple days off and you will be fine fury. You may get it and you may not, but unless you are at risk from any other virus; it isn’t anything to really worry about.

If you have a fever and it rises over 102, it’s time to go get treatment; regardless of the cause of the fever itself. Health insurance or discount plans like Ameriplan will help with the cost, so don’t hesitate to go to the doctor if you find yourself in this situation. Another warning sign that you may be at risk is if the symptoms are still getting worse after the fourth day. Most people have had at least one strain of the flu in their lives, and it isn’t much fun; but the panic that is currently in the media is unfounded. Over the course of 2009 we will most likely see this strain slow down and then resurge later in the year, and some people will die from it. Given the choice though, swine flu is easier to deal with than the various other flu strains we see every other year.

Canine influenza is a very real and highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs, caused by a new and unusual influenza known as the H3N8 virus, a subtype first discovered in 2004. Due to the fact that canine influenza is a virus fairly new to the canine population, dogs lack preexisting immunity to it. Dogs of any age, breed or health status are susceptible to infection. Although it has not been documented, it is likely that dogs who have recovered from the infection retain immunity to re-infection for an undetermined time period.

Unlike viruses that infect people, canine influenza is not a "seasonal" infection and can occur at any time, year round. It is one of the several viruses and bacteria that are associated with canine respiratory disease, or what is commonly called "Kennel Cough" (infectious tracheobronchitis).

Canine influenza virus (CIV) infection can cause respiratory disease by itself or along with other canine respiratory pathogens. Like influenza viruses in other species, CIV causes flu-like symptoms, coughing, sneezing and nasal discharge. Canine influenza is most likely spread where dogs are housed together and there is a high turnover of dogs in and out of the facility. Grooming parlors, shelters, veterinary clinics, boarding facilities and pet stores pose the highest risk of exposure. Stay at home dogs that only walk within their neighborhood are at low risk.

Testing to confirm canine influenza virus infection is available at veterinary diagnostic centers. The tests are preformed using respiratory secretions at the onset of symptoms using blood samples. The second is collected two to three weeks later. Prevention is the key to any disease outbreak, whether it is Kennel Cough, swine flu or canine influenza. These viruses are highly susceptible to common disinfectants.

The good news is that there is a new vaccine for the H3N8 subtype that just came out on the market this past year. This new vaccine has been shown to reduce viral shedding, thereby minimizing the spread and severity of clinical signs. It has been proven safe and well tolerated in more than 700 dogs.

Always be careful where you take your dog and take it to the vet at the first sign of a problem.
