This virus infects the epithelial cells of the respiratory tract. Influenza is caused by a virus in the Orthomixovirus family with Influenza A, Influenza B, and Influenza C that infects vertebrates with lungs mostly.

Influenza A & Influenza B cause the major epidemics.

Influenza A strains have become familiar in the news.
Avian flu that infects birds and some mammals including humans
Swine flu that infects humans & pigs
There are A strains found in sea mammals as well as domestic animals.

Influenza B infects humans primarily.
